Seriously?

We had a woman come in today (and I recognized her and her mug, so she's fairly regular) with her favourite tumbler that had the lid stuck on. Apparently she or someone else had wound it in uneven or too tight and no one could get it unstuck. We tried for her, though why she thinks a little barista girl could unstick it when her big husband couldn't is beyond me, but failed. What happened next somewhat amazed me...only at starbucks.

She tried to get store credit to buy a new travel mug.

On a tumbler. That she broke. That we haven't sold IN OVER FOUR YEARS.

Yah, thats right. While I've only worked here for a bit over two years, my shift remembers us selling this specific travel mug during the summer four years ago (right before she transfered).

This woman seriously could not comprehend why we wouldn't, and couldn't, give her store credit on a product that she bought four years ago and broke at home.

Only at starbucks, guys.

Florida in Winter

I guess this is a mean way to make my first post...seafood off my grill while half the country is buried in snow...

Lobster tail & white shrimp marinated in 100% Florida Orange Juice (but of course!), soy sauce, oyster sauce, and garlic and then grilled on a marble stone that's been seasoned with olive oil.

Snow peas and broccoli stir fried in a wok on the side burner.

And since we're experiencing frigid 54 degree weather tonight, a glass of Tower of London Mead with Scotch Whiskey.

And yeah...it was good.

I've come here to complain about the glitter.
if you are wondering "what glitter?"
You were one of the lucky ones that were not involved in the Rollout.

All I can say is that after changing out of my work clothes, and taking a shower IT'S STILL ON ME. How is that even possible?

on to other news, does anyone have any information on the setup of the full leaf teas? I found nothing on the portal, and as usual no one at my store knows anything.

Also, If someone orders a Grande one teabag Chai, One teabag WSO, Steamed AJ, what do you charge?

Peppermint Meltaways

Peppermint meltaways--now with icing

These cookies (someone else posted the recipe, so I won't duplicate it) were a new recipe for me this year, and they got raves from everybody that tried them! They're buttery, soft and just minty enough without knocking you over. I opted not to crush the peppermint on top, just to see how it went, and they were fine without it.

Pumpkin Cheesecake

I used the recipe from this URL: http://gimmesomeoven.com/pumpkin-cheesecake-with-gingerbread-crust/

This was my first attempt at a cheesecake. I thought it turned out pretty well. It was a complete hit with the family, all the other deserts were hardly touched. I was pretty proud of myself!

pear cake tatin

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 12:07 AM

I'm a huge fan of apple cake tatin, but since it was Christmas I wanted to make it more seasonal and use pears, so here she is! The cake is pretty simple but very yummy  and light, so you don't feel too weighed down after a huge Christmas feast!

Tons more pictures and info at my blog jonesing for...

easy spiced crust

Hello! I've posted comments, but haven't posted anything to introduce myself until now. I did make some improvised pumpkin bread pudding for thanksgiving, but it didn't look good (tasted fine though, as most bread puddings do). But today being Christmas with the bigger holiday meal at dinner, I had the oven and lunch.

This is an easy fix for when you want a holiday goody without pulling out the mixer:

I am a lazy cook. Hello *wavie* But a good oven should be used.

Thanks for all the Sugar Cookie recipes!

Turducken

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 12:54 AM
Xmas 09 Dinner

After going to a couple of grocery stores in the area and not being able to buy a duck this year, we decided to give Turducken a go... I've always heard such nice things about it.

It was... alright. As with most processed and boxed foods, the seasoned skin was a little on the salty side to us, but not completely out of control. I think my husband summed it up thusly... "Well, I wouldn't not do it again, but your roasted ducks are better. Maybe if we got an unseasoned one and you had more to do with that." All in all, that's high praise from my husband for both me and the Turducken.

I'd give it 7 or 8 out of 10 forks.

But the Farnum Hills Cider was amazing.

Date night & baked brie ideas

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 4:30 AM
My husband and I have four children and are on a somewhat tight budget, so "date night" doesn't happen very often. I was driving with him this evening and decided that on New Year's Eve, I'd like to try to get the kids to bed on time and ring in the new year with my husband. I've got one remaining bottle of bubbly mead that I brewed for my sister's wedding nearly five years ago. I'm trying to think of some relatively low effort, not too expensive vegetarian treats to go alongside. I had been thinking of making baked brie, but he asked me to make that to bring to his parents' house on Friday, so I'd rather not eat that twice in one week. The only reason I mention it is that this sort of thing -- gooey, rich and hot -- is the sort of thing I think he'd enjoy. Advance preparation would be a BIG bonus since I had back surgery this month and tend to be in more pain at night.

While I think of it, here's a photo of the baked brie that I will be making for his parents:

The original recipe, posted on Crockpot 365, calls for a 13 ounce piece of brie in a small ceramic dish to be placed at the bottom of a crock pot. I made some modifications in the photo, using dried cranberries instead of apricots, dropping the sugar altogether, and quadrupling the cheese without scaling the topping up. I used the crock pot without a ceramic dish, so the cheese cooked more quickly than the original recipe despite being a much larger amount.

This Friday, however, I'm considering working fresh cranberries into the topping also, since it was still sweeter than I prefer and unsweetened dried cranberries are impossible to find. I'm concerned that they might not be fully cooked before the cheese is done, though, so I might precook the dried and fresh berries together on the stove before assembling the dish. Has anybody done anything like that?

Chocolate-Mint Creams

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 1:47 PM
As a last minute time-killer and something to add for desert for today's Christmas get-together with family I whipped up this recipe the night before. I got this recipe from an old copy of the 2007 "100 Best Cookies" issue of Better Homes and Gardens.

I thought this recipe was simple (and delicious!)and didn't call for too many fancy ingredients. I just had to buy the chocolate.

Ok, so it looks more like a Valentine's treat with the leftover heart sprinkles I decided to throw on there. But still cute nonetheless.
